The Roslyn High School Tennis Doubles Team of Paige Mintz and Melissa Edelblum became Nassau County Champions on October 11 in a competition that garnered Roslyn High School its first doubles title in team history. Coach Victoria Schnittger decided to pair the two, her best singles players, for the championships. Paige and Melissa had to battle it out with third-seeded Roslyn doubles team Marissa Bernstein and Samantha Richman, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4. According to Athletic Director Joanna Commander, it was the only loss all season for the doubles team of Marissa and Samantha.
All four students earned All State honors and competed in the New York State Tennis Championships in Syracuse on November 6-9, where Paige and Melissa came in first place in the State Championship Consolation Round Doubles Tournament. Paige also won the State Sportsmanship Award for Section VIII.

We encourage parents to facilitate their children's participation in Roslyn Athletics by checking that all necessary medical and school documentation has been submitted to our school nurse by August 10, 2009.
If your child did not take the free, in-school athletic physical examinations on Wednesday, June 3 (HS) or Wednesday, June 10 (MS), please be sure that your private physician uses the School Medical Form, which is good for all athletic seasons of the school year. You can download the form here: click for either the high school medical form or middle school medical form They are also from the school nurse or school building main office.
All student-athletes also need an athletic consent card annually, to be completed by their parent. This form is available from the attendance office or the athletic office during the summer.
In addition, New York State regulations require that a "medical update" be filled out seasonally by the parent. This form is available by clicking here or from the attendance office at the high school or middle school. Please return all paperwork in a timely manner so that it can be processed and your child's sport season will not need to be delayed. The medical update form for fall sports should be dated as follows: July 19 (high school football), August 1 (other HS sports) or August 10 (middle school).
In review, here is simplified checklist:
To be submitted to the school nurse:
(1) Athletic Physical - dated April 1, 2009 or later - form available here
(2) Medical Update - dated after July 19 (hs football) August 1 (other high school sports) or August 10 (middle school). The form is necessary for each athletic season. This form is available by clicking here.
(3) Vision Clearance Form (if applicable) (If your child's vision screens at 20/200 or worse, a vision clearance form is also required for contact sports.) This form is available by clicking here.
To be submitted to athletic director or coach:
(4) Parent consent card (blue)
High School students are welcome to go to either the high school or middle school on scheduled physical examinations dates if they need an exam in preparation for athletics during the school year. School exams are free, fast, and the easiest, most expedient way for parents to assure that their children will be ready for all seasonal tryouts.
If you have questions regarding your child's medical documents for athletics, please call Mrs. Safford (HS nurse) at 801-5110 or Mrs. Collins (MS nurse) at 801-5210. If you require additional information regarding the athletic seasons or procedures, please call the district athletic director at 801-5160.
We encourage your child's participation in our athletic programs, and thank you for your cooperation in preparing him/her for these activities.

It is our expectation that Roslyn High School athletes will maintain excellent attendance at all practices and games that are scheduled during their athletic seasons. A sense of commitment and responsibility are vital ingredients for personal and team success.
• Legal absences from athletic practices or contests will be defined the same way that they are for school absences: school-sponsored trips and activities, days of religious observance, days of suspension from school and court appearance dates. Students may return to athletic practices/contests when they return to school after a legal absence.
• Absences from school will not be considered "cuts" from practices or contests. They carry no consequences in terms of playing time.
• "Special case" absences may include death or serious illness in the families of athletes. Communications received from parents/athletes and given to coaches will be shared with the Athletic Director and the consequences for these absences, if any, shall be determined by the Director.
• Students who miss practices or contests due to illegal absences will not be removed from teams. However, the following minimum consequences will apply to all illegal absences whether these practices are on school days or school vacations:
(1) For every single contest missed, the athlete will be "benched" for the next regularly-scheduled contest;
(2) For every two practices missed, the athlete will be "benched" for the next regularly-scheduled contest.
• The consequences for missed practices or contests will be the same for all high school athletes on any sport at any level.
• After the consequences are served, the return of individual athletes to regular playing time or "starting time" will be left to the discretion of the individual coach.
• Any individual exceptions to these attendance standards will be at the sole discretion of the Athletic Director after consultation with the coaching, counseling or administrative staff.
Fall Season: Student athletes must be present at all fall season try-outs, which will begin before the school year starts. Varsity and JV football begin on Wednesday, August 19, 2009; all other sports begin on Monday, August 31, 2009.
Winter Season: There will be practice on Wednesday, November 25. There will not be practice on Thanksgiving Day, November 26, 2009. There will be practice on Friday and Saturday of Thanksgiving weekend, November 27 and 28, 2009.
For the 2009-10 holiday recess, all winter athletes will be off from Thursday, December 24 through Monday, December 28th. Practices resume on Tuesday, December 29, 2009-Saturday, January 2, 2010. There will not be practice on Friday, January 1st. If, however, county contests that would be beneficial to teams/individuals are available to Roslyn athletes on ³protected² days, coaches may schedule optional practices/contests. Athletes¹ absences on these optional additional days would carry no consequences.
If we qualify, winter sports¹ playoff games and matches will take place during the February recess, February 13-21, 2010. Varsity athletes are expected to be available for these championship contests.
Spring Season: The Easter and Passover holidays are simultaneous in 2010. There will not be practices from Saturday, March 27-Sunday, April 4th, 2010. Athletes are expected to be available when practices and games resume on Monday and Tuesday, April 5 and 6, 2010. Classes resume on Wednesday, April 7.
