Roslyn Summer
Academic Program
for Grades K-8 2009
A slide show about the 2009 Summer Program
Welcome!
The Roslyn Summer Academic Program is a four-week extended learning opportunity for Roslyn residents who have completed grades K-8. The daily four-hour program primarily targets instruction in English language arts and mathematics for students who need additional assistance in those areas. Physical education instruction is also integrated into the daily schedule. While the Summer Academic Program is open to all Roslyn residents, the curriculum is specifically designed to help children who did not meet the performance indicators for their grade level. The program is staffed by certified Roslyn Public School teachers, a school nurse, and a Roslyn administrator. Class size is approximately 15 students.
Registration deadline: Monday, June 15, 2009 (see below for registration information and forms)
Note: The Roslyn Summer Academic Program is contingent on passage of the school budget for 2009-10 on Tuesday, May 19, 2009.
Instruction
Instruction focuses on skill development in a variety of theme-based activities each week, as children explore topics about American history, our community, fine arts, and environmental concerns. The core curriculum includes early literacy competencies and mathematical concepts in grades K-3 and grade-specific literacy and mathematical skills in grades 4-8. Children participate in reading, writing, listening, computer, and mathematical activities, based on the weekly theme. Local field trips are also included to support the curriculum.
Physical education classes enhance the core curriculum offered in the Summer Academic Program. Instructional goals in physical education include age-appropriate motor skills, health-related fitness activities, and a variety of individual and group challenges. The well-rounded Summer Academic Program will provide valuable experiences to all children who attend this June and July.
