Days of Religious Observance:
Homework and Testing Guidelines

The Roslyn Public Schools acknowledges that we have a diverse community in which a variety of religious denominations are represented. Procedures and practices are continually reviewed to ensure that all students are able to successfully complete their studies and participate in school activities to the fullest extent possible.

The guidelines described here will be extended to any student who observes a religious day not included on the list below, provided the family makes it known to the building principal, who will communicate it to the classroom teacher. Students should also present a note to the teacher prior to the holiday, whenever possible.

In the assignment of homework and administration of tests, we have established the following guidelines:

• Long-term assignments and homework may be given the day before a religious day of observance but no assignments or homework should be due the day after a religious day of observance.

• No long-term assignments or homework should be due the day after any of the religious days of observances listed below.

• No tests should be given on, or the day after, any of the religious days of observances listed below:

First and Last Day of Ramadan
Rosh Hashanah*
Yom Kippur*
Sukkot*
Epiphany/Eastern Orthodox Christmas
First 2 days of Passover*

*Jewish holidays start sundown the previous day
